Tribute To: Barack H. Obama
To: Roquel
From: P.Davis (A Dear Friend)
Obama Inauguration. I turned the TV on just a couple of minutes before Malia and Sasha made their way through the corridor before their entrance. The girls appear to be so carefree! As I watched them, I began to feel tears creep down my cheeks. "Why?" I questioned my own emotions. Watching these Black girls, I flashed back to when I and my sisters were their age, and life was anything but carefree. Our every step was measured by the boundaries of how far White Folks would let us go.
In that moment I remembered a time when my mom directed us away from the nice clean restroom that was on the main floor of the Greyhound bus station down to the leaky one with the wet floors in the basement. She told us that the upstairs restrooms were for Greyhound customers, and we were only visiting her friend who worked there. She didn’t have the heart to tell us that even in the late sixties and early seventies, some restrooms were still for Whites Only. Ah yes, these two Black girls would have the privilege of using any restroom, anywhere they chose.
I realized that so many of the choices I have made in life (and still make) are rooted in reactions to racism…from where I go, to the size purse I carry. In rural South Carolina , there are some places I dare not be caught after dark…where the confederate flag flies proximately and being a redneck is a source of pride … places where I dare not run out of gas, or stop to use a rest room. Even today, when I enter a department store, I carry a tiny purse because I don't want to be suspected of stealing.
I made sure my children always attended schools that were ethnically mixed because I didn't want them to have the same racial hang-ups I did. And when my daughter graduates college this year, I hope she has the same carefree attitude as Sasha and Malia. And may she never feel that her steps are restricted because of her race.
May my daughter always feel free to use the upstairs bathroom.
Let’s take this day as a remembrance of who we are and how far we’ve come.
